Gravity test on Thursday night was still not showing corrcet colour but now I have some more dark crystal and Carafa 3 up my sleeve so I have put 250g and 100g respectively in to steep for a while.
That should provide some ruby and brown tones but I just hope that there is not too MUCH colour this time.
Last night I tried to colour correct my brew as it was too light.
I used:
25g Dark Crystal Malt 220 EBC
125g Med Crystal 160 EBC
150G Choc Malt Unknown EBC
Steeped in 3L of water for 30 mins.
Boiled this for 10 mins with 27g of Fuggles in a hop bag.
Left the whole lot to cool down for a while then added to fermenter. Put the lid on and gave it a swirl around.
Fermentation this morning was higher than before I added the additional wort.
Colour in the hydrometer sample is a sort of brown colour but still not dark enough for my liking. Not sure what my next steps will be as I don't have any darker malts to add at this stage.
Could really do with some Carafa 3 or similar to add deeper colour. Might have to chalk up to experience on new gear. Taste seems quite OK so it's not a total loss.
Airlock started a stream of bubbles by late Sunday arvo. No sudden belches... just constant stream. Slowed down a bit by tonight but still a belch every second or so. Good ferment.
Gravity has dropped 26 points in 24 hours so I guess the yeast are happy.
Lots of suspended matter in the wort and a little lighter than my normal Goblin recipe. Might need more/darker Choccy malt which is good since I will be getting many KG's of it in the AHB bulkbuy.
